Bhima Koregaon case: Accused were planning to assassinate PM Modi


The Pune Police have proposed charging the accused in the Bhima Koregaon case with conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, waging war against the nation and state of Maharashtra and acts of terrorism. 

The Pune Police has submitted draft charge against the nine arrested accused activists and 10 other overground and underground operatives of the banned outfit CPI Maoist in the Elgaar Parishad case. In the draft, the police have proposed charging them with conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, waging war against the nation and state of Maharashtra and acts of terrorism.
The Pune Police on Wednesday submitted draft charges against the 19 accused in the case which is also known as the Bhima Koregaon case at a special UAPA court in Pune.
The police have mentioned 16 charges, primarily against the accused, of which eight are under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act). The charges mention about plans of procurement of the M4 rifles and 4,00,000 ammunition rounds by Maoists to attack security forces and eventually overthrow and democratically elected government.
The charge draft also talks about plans for procurement of Russian grenade launcher, German automatic grenade launcher, MNitrate, explosives, nails etc by the accused.
The weapons and ammunition were to be procured from a contact and then to be brought in the country through Nepal and Manipur. It charge draft also mentions raising Rs 8 crore funds for the same.
Police have claimed that the Elgaar Parishad rally organised in December 2017 at Shaniwar Wada in Pune with the members of Kabir Kala Manch through acts, play, songs and naxal literature, was funded by CPI Maoist.
Police have claimed that it was aimed at creating unrest in Maharashtra and the rest of India.
The charge draft also talks about six other such places where the Kabir Kala Manch had organised plays and shows in the state.
The draft charge mentions how the accused had planned to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi during road shows and claims that the plan was to be carried out on the lines of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.
The Pune Police had arrested Rona Wilson, Shoma Sen, Sudhir Dhawale, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, P Varvara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira in 2018 and two chargesheets have been filed in the case till date.
The chargesheets and draft names underground wanted Maoist cadres like Milind Teltumbde, Prakash alias Naveen, Kishan alias Prashanto Bose, Mangalu and Deepu.
Two others who were named as accused in the case, Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde, remain under protection from arrest.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled on January 1 and is expected that charges would be framed against the accused and the trial would start thereafter.
