President's wife stitching masks for shelter homes

Ministry of Home Affairs in its recent guidelines on COVID-19 management made it compulsory to wear masks at all-times at work or in public spaces and gatherings. The First Lady Savita Kovind has also supported this initiative and led by example. She showed her support by stitching face masks at Shakti Haat in the President’s Estate. These masks will be distributed at various shelter homes of Delhi Urban Shelter.

Savita Kovind is the wife of the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. Savita Kovind’s parents were from Lahore, present-day Pakistan, moved to India after the partition in 1947 and settled in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar. The first lady is a former employee in Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). She worked there as a telephone operator and eventually got promoted to the post of Chief Section Supervisor before taking voluntary retirement. She has a son and a daughter.

As the spouse of the governor of Bihar, she was well known for her social work. Now, as the first lady she is the official hostesses of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Savita Kovind has been the First Lady of India since July 2017.
